Definition of the word hake

The origin of the word "hake" can be traced back to the medieval Middle English language, specifically around the 13th century. It is believed to have originated from the Old Norse word "haki", which referred to a type of fish that was commonly caught in the North Sea. When the Vikings, who spoke Old Norse, settled in England and Scandinavia during medieval times, they introduced the word "haki" to the local populations. Over time, the word evolved to become "hake" in the English language, which is still used today to describe a particular type of fish. The hake inhabits the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea, and it is a commercially important species of fish that is commonly consumed by humans. In fact, hake is considered an important food source in many European countries, particularly Spain, Portugal, and France, where it is traditionally prepared in a variety of dishes. Interestingly, the genus name of the hake, "Urophycis", meaning "tail fin", is a holdover from when it was mistakenly identified as a species of catfish in the New World during the 18th century. The confusion was likely due to the hake's unique anatomy, which includes a dark, Truant-like band located just behind the gill plate, similar to that of a catfish.
