The term "half back" in sports, particularly American football, originated in the early 20th century. In football's early days, teams used a single backfield position known as the "tailback" or "running back," responsible for carrying the ball and running with it. As the sport evolved, strategies changed, and teams began to utilize multiple players in the backfield. Two of these positions, the "halfback" and the "fullback," were introduced in 1920 as the game's ruleset became more standardized. The halfback emerged as a player who lined up behind the line of scrimmage, roughly halfway between the fullback and the ends of the line. This position allowed greater flexibility in formation, with halfbacks serving as triple threats who could run, pass, or kick the ball. The name "halfback" itself suggests the position's location in relation to the fullback, as the halfback's role is to cover half the backfield. The halfback's responsibilities also differ slightly from the fullback's; while the fullback is typically a bigger, stronger player who smashes into the line to create openings or block for the halfback, the halfback tends to be faster and more agile, both rushing and receiving passes. Over time, football strategies have evolved so that the halfback's role has become less defined, with halfbacks frequently functioning as running backs or wide receivers in today's game.
