Definition of the word hoodwink

The word "hoodwink" originated in the Middle English language during the 14th century. At that time, it referred to a specific type of eyewear called a "hoodwink ope" or "hoodwannop." These devices were essentially eye masks with a hood attached to prevent light from entering the wearer's eyes. The hoodwink ope was primarily used by oculists, or eye doctors, during eye examinations. It allowed them to better observe a patient's eyes without being affected by external light sources. However, the hood and mask also served a practical purpose in medieval times. Miners, for instance, would use hoodwinks to enable them to work in dimly lit tunnels or shafts. Interestingly, the term "hoodwink" also had a second meaning during this time. In addition to referring to the eyewear, it could also refer to any kind of deception or trickery. The origin of this alternate definition is shrouded in mystery, but it's possible that it emerged as a slang term used by merchants and tradesmen to describe the way shoppers could be "winked" or lured into buying goods by clever displays or tactics. Over time, the use of hoodwinks declined as technology and lighting advances made them less necessary. However, the word "hoodwink" itself continued to evolve, taking on the modern meaning of "to deceive or mislead someone" that we're familiar with today. Although we no longer wear hoodwinks as eyewear, we still use the term to describe anyone who attempts to "blindside" or "dupe" us into believing something false.
