Definition of the word hot chocolate

The term "hot chocolate" originated in Europe during the 16th century, when the Aztecs introduced cocoa beans to Spanish conquistadors. The Spanish developed a drinking chocolate beverage from the roasted cocoa beans, which they called "xocolata" in their language. The Spanish introduced this beverage to the rest of Europe, where it quickly gained popularity. However, the high cost of cocoabeans, which were imported from the New World, made it a luxurious drink primarily reserved for the upper classes. In Britain, the term "hot chocolate" became commonly used during the 17th century. Chocolate was considered a luxury item and was often consumed in a thick, molten form as a health tonic. The addition of milk and sugar to the beverage made it more palatable to the British palate. In fact, King Charles II, a devoted chocolate drinker, declared "hot chocolate" to be a healthful substitute for chocolate liqueurs, as it was less alcoholic. This usage spread, and "hot chocolate" became the established terminology for the sweetened, milk-enhanced beverage. Today, "hot chocolate" is a popular winter drink enjoyed around the world, and its popularity continues to grow. Its origin, however, remains tied to the indulgent history of exploring new worlds and the craving for a sweet, indulgent treat.
