Definition of the word hydroplane

The word "hydroplane" can be traced back to the late 19th century when boats were being designed to travel at high speeds on water. The term "hydrodynamics" was coined to describe the scientific study of fluid motion, and "hydro" meaning water, was added to the word "plane" (which comes from the Greek word "plateia," meaning wide or flat) to create the term "hydroplane."
