The first part of the word, "mīs," meant "poison" or "gall" in Old English. The Old English word "lēah" also meant mistletoe, and it also had the same "lēahmīs" meaning of "galling charge." The reason mistletoe was associated with gall or poison is due to its parasitic nature. Mistletoe is not grown from the ground, but from the branches and limbs of trees, where it absorbs nutrients from the surrounding environment.
