The word "musk" refers to a strong-smelling substance that is secreted by certain mammals, primarily two species of male musk deer found in Asia. The word "musk" itself comes from the Old French "mosque," which means "little bag" or "pouch." This name was given to the substance because it is found in a small sac located near the male's anus. The use of musk as a fragrance and perfume ingredient dates back to ancient times. In fact, the Chinese began cultivating musk-producing animals as early as the Tang Dynasty (618-907 CE).
