Definition of the word personal space

The term "personal space" refers to the physical distance that a person maintains around him/her in social situations to fulfill his/her need for privacy and autonomy. The concept and use of the term "personal space" originated in the 1960s and gained popularity in the 1970s as a result of the growing interest in psychology and sociology. The phrase "personal space" was coined by psychologist Edward T. Hall in his book "The Hidden Dimension" published in 1959. Hall introduced the concept of proxemics, which is the study of how people use space in social situations, and identified four types of distance zones that people maintain based on the nature of the relationship they have with others: intimate (0 ft to 1.5 ft), personal (1.5 ft to 4 ft), social (4 ft to 12 ft), and public (12 ft or more). Hall argued that these distance zones are culturally relative and vary across different societies and contexts. For example, in collectivist cultures like Asia, where social harmony and interdependence are valued, people may have smaller intimate and personal distance zones, while in individualistic cultures like the United States, where privacy and personal autonomy are valued, people may have larger personal distance zones.
