Origin of the word rhodium

The word "rhodium" comes from the Greek word "rhodon," which means "rose." This happened when the French chemist Louis Nicholas Vauquelin discovered the element in 1801 during his analysis of platinum ores. Vauquelin noticed that an impurity in the platinum samples emitted a rose-colored flame when heated and called it "new red substance" in French. Later, the English chemist William Hyde Wollaston proposed the name "rhodium" for the new element in 1844, drawing inspiration from the Greek word for rose in honor of the flower's vivid pink hue. Interestingly, although rhodium is a valuable and lustrous metal, it is not used in its pure form to make objects. Instead, it is primarily used as an additive to increase the hardness, durability, and resistance to corrosion in platinum, iridium, and palladium alloys, making it an essential component in the manufacture of catalytic converters, dental alloys, laboratory apparatus, and jewelry.
