Definition of the word rivet

The word "rivet" originated from the Old French word "rivetter," which means "a person who fastens with rivets." The origin of the French word is uncertain, but it may have been derived from the Old Norse word "hryfla," which means "a file" or "a cutter." In medieval times, rivets were used in armor to fasten several metal plates together. The process of fastening involved driving a smooth, cylindrical, and round metal rod into a hole that had been previously punched in the armor plate.
