cây sequoia
The word "sequoia" is derived from the Latin name given to a type of giant redwood tree by Spanish explorer Francisco Junípero Serra. Serra, a Jesuit missionary, encountered the tree while on a scientific expedition in California in the late 1700s. He recognized its resemblance to the species Cupressus aegyptiaca, or Libanese cedar, which in Latin is known as cedrus libani or libanensis. Serra coined the term sequoia sempervirens, meaning "evergreen tree from the sempervirens (always green) land," to describe the redwood's unique evergreen properties in its native habitat. The name has since become commonly associated with the tree family Cupressaceae, which includes the giant redwoods still found in California's mountains today.
