Definition of the word soak out

The phrase "soak out" is a colloquial term used to describe a state of intoxication resulting from excessive alcohol consumption. The origin of this expression can be traced back to the mid-20th century. In the past, bars and pubs in the US and the UK often had a tradition of providing a free drink to regular patrons known as "soakers". These soakers would drink this complimentary beverage and then leave without ordering anything else. This led to some bar owners becoming frustrated with the practice and developing a new expression to describe such patrons who only came to the bar to get a free drink and then leave - "soak out". The term eventually evolved to describe someone who becomes so intoxicated that they become incapacitated and cannot stand up properly, causing them to "soak out" of whatever establishment they're in. Over time, the term has become more widely known outside of the bar setting and is now used colloquially to describe anyone who overindulges in alcohol consumption and becomes excessively drunk.
