Definition of the word steel

The word "steel" originated from the Old English word "stael", which referred to a type of iron alloy. The term "stael" was derived from the Proto-Germanic word "*stahliz", which was also the source of the Modern German word "Stahl". In the 14th century, the spelling "steel" emerged in Middle English, referring specifically to a type of iron alloy that was produced by adding carbon to molten iron.
