Definition of the word steering wheel

The word "steering wheel" originated during the early 20th century, as automobiles transformed from rare novelties to mass-produced vehicles. The term "steering" refers to the action of directing the movement of a vehicle, while a "wheel" is a circular device used for translocating or propelling an object. Initially, automobiles were equipped with a tiller or a lever (reminiscent of a rudder on a boat) for steering. However, as the industry evolved, the automakers recognized the need for a more comfortable and intuitive steering mechanism that allowed the driver to maintain control with greater ease while ensuring safer driving conditions. The first-ever steering wheel was introduced in 1911 by René Panhard, a French automotive engineer, and the Co-founder of Panhard et Levassor, as a part of the Panhard-Levassor Type X35 car. The wheel was symmetrical, which allowed the driver to position themselves at the center, and easily change the direction of the vehicle by moving their hands in either direction, making it more convenient and comfortable than the tiller. The term "steering wheel" became a commonly used expression in the automotive industry in the 1920s, and gradually spread to other languages as cars became more popular globally.
