The name "Stepney" is believed to have originated from the Old English word "ēasteney," which means "eastern island" or "eastern meadow." This is because the area, located in the East End of London, was swampy and prone to flooding, creating an island-like environment in the eastern part of the city. The area was settled by Saxons in the 5th century, and it was first mentioned in historical records in the 10th century as Stitthæmy. Over time, the name evolved to Stytonaehy and Projectun, before finally becoming Stepney.
