Definition of the word stray

The word "stray" originated from the Old English word "strǟgan," which meant "to wander," or "to roam." The root of this word, "strǟk," also meant "a way" or "a path." The word's modern meaning, referring to an animal that has wandered or disappeared from its home or owner, is believed to have developed in the late 14th century, when the word "strayne" was used to describe something that has become separated from a larger group. This usage was eventually applied to lost or wandering animals. In its earliest forms, the word "stray" was used to describe people as well as animals. The Oxford English Dictionary notes that in 1225, the word "strayng" was used to refer to a medieval feudal tenant who had wandered away from their land. However, over time, the meaning of the word shifted primarily to animals. Today, "stray" is widely used to describe both domesticated animals, such as cats or dogs, and wild animals that have become displaced from their natural habitats. While the word "stray" can connote a negative connotation, as it commonly implies that the animal has become lost due to its own misfortune, it is also used to describe animals that have simply become separated from their owners or groups, and who may be in need of assistance.
