Definition of the word switchback

The word "switchback" is derived from the habit of switchbacks, or pack mules used for transporting goods in the mountainous regions of the American West during the 19th century. These mules were trained to "switch back" or zigzag backwards and forwards on steep slopes to maintain their footing and avoid slipping. As railway construction began to increase in these areas, the same term was applied to the newly engineered railways with sharp bends or zigzag turns, known as "switchbacks," which allowed trains to navigate or traverse steep grades safely and efficiently.
