The word "toner" in the context of skincare refers to a liquid solution that is applied after cleansing and before moisturizing. The origin of this term can be traced back to the early 1970s when Christine Sheldon, a cosmetic chemist, developed the concept of a "stringent" liquid toner to replace the traditional cotton balls soaked in astringent solutions. Back then, "stringent" was a common term used to describe liquid compounds that tightened and narrowed body tissues due to their high acidic content. Sheldon's original toner formula, which contained a high concentration of alcohol and other active ingredients like witch hazel and menthol, was effective in shrinking pores, restoring pH levels, and minimizing the chances of breakouts.
