Origin of the word transsexual

The word "transsexual" was first coined in the 1940s by the Austrian-German physician and sexologist, Dr. Kurt Freund. It was initially used to describe individuals with a strong desire to transition from one gender to another, including physical changes such as hormone therapy and sex reassignment surgery. The term "transsexual" combines two Greek words: "trans," meaning "across" or "changing," and "sexual," meaning "of or relating to sex or gender." By combining these two words, Freund created a term to describe individuals who experience a strong sense of discomfort with, or opposition to, the gender they were assigned at birth, and desire to transition to the opposite gender.
