Origin of the word twopence

The word "twopence" is an Old English term that originated during the medieval era when England adopted a decimal currency system. The term "penny" derives from the Latin word "denarius," which was a Roman currency worth around one-quarter of a day's average wage. In the 15th century, English merchants and traders began to adopt the the decimal currency system, introducing coins worth two, four, eight, and 16 pence. These coins, known as "two-pence" or "twopence," were worth twice the value of a single pence (penny). The term "twopence" was used to refer to a specific amount of money, much like "five dollars" or "10 yen" are used today. Initially, twopence was considered a fairly high value, as the average daily wage for an English laborer was around 12 pence.
