Definition of the word wine glass

The origin of the term "wine glass" can be traced back to medieval Europe. During this time, wine was typically consumed from large communal vessels known as "ambers" or "flagons." However, as wine began to be consumed by the upper classes as a luxury item, small drinking vessels known as "glewises" or "gucchen" came into use. These glasses, made of either metal or wood, allowed for easier sipping and provided a means to show off the quality of the wine being consumed. As glassmaking technology improved in the 15th century, glass drinking vessels became increasingly popular.
