Origin of the word acetylene

The word "acetylene" comes from the chemical compounds acetone and ethylene. It was coined in the late 19th century by a French chemist named Edmond Frémy, who discovered two closely related compounds, eth Anal and Dieth Anal, present in the distillation liquids of acetone (a compound found in nail polish remover and other solvents). Frémy noticed that when these compounds were heated, a highly flammable gas, with a strong odor and colorless appearance, was formed. Initially, Frémy called this gas Acétylène Débitaire (debitary acetylene), or simply "debitary gas." The name "acetylene" was suggested by another French chemist Alexandre Bro>", who noticed the similarity between the chemical structure of acetylene and that of acetone (CH3COCH3) because both compounds contain a C3 group. Bro also found that acetylene was a linear molecule, with carbon-carbon triple bonds (C=C), making it unique in comparison to other hydrocarbons at the time. Thus, the name "acetylene," a combination of "acetone" and "ethylene," became widely used, and as acetylene's applications grew, it quickly became one of the most versatile and widely used industrial gases, today used in a variety of industries, from welding and cutting, to lighting and as a fuel source for engines.
