Definition of the word gaff

The word "gaff" has its origin in the nautical vocabulary and has been used by sailors for centuries. Its exact origin is unclear, but there are two popular theories about how it came into existence. The first theory suggests that the word "gaff" comes from the Old Norse word "gaffi," which means "hook" or "grabber."
