Definition of the word genie

The word "genie" has its roots in the Arabic language. In classical Arabic, the word is "jinnī" or "jinni" (جintelو pronunciation). The term "jinnī" comes from the Arabic noun "jinn" (جنس), which refers to a type of spirit or supernatural being from Arab and Islamic mythology. These spirits are said to be made of smokeless fire and are capable of assuming human or animal form. The original use of the term "jinnī" was to describe spirits that were often malevolent or mischievous, causing trouble for humans.
