Origin of the word osmium

The word "osmium" was coined by the Swedish chemist Jöns Jacob Berzelius in 1823. During his experiments with platinum ores, Berzelius discovered a new, dense metal that he named osmium after the Greek word osme (οσμή), meaning "odor." This was due to the fact that the metal had a strong unpleasant smell, obscured by its high melting point (around 3,027°C), which made it difficult to analyze at the time. Despite its initial unpleasantness, osmium's characteristics have since made it an important industrial metal, commonly used in a variety of applications, such as hardening alloys and as a catalyst in organic chemistry. Today, osmium is relatively rare and expensive, with its primary sources being Russian and South African platinum ores.
