Definition of the word snort

The origin of the word "snort" can be traced back to the Middle English verb "snotren," which meant "to sneeze." However, the modern meaning of "snort" as a loud inhalation through the nostrils, typically accompanied by a buzzing sound, first appeared in the 19th century. At this time, "snort" was primarily used to describe the sound made by horses and other animals when suddenly inhaling air after exhaling. In humans, the usage of "snort" to describe a similar action didn't arise until later in the century, when drug users began to use the term to describe the loud inhalation of illicit substances. Interestingly, the term "snorting" was initially used to describe the act of consuming drugs through nasal inhalation, rather than just the act of inhaling. According to the Oxford English Dictionary, the first recorded use of "snorting" to describe drug use was in a newspaper article from 1888, in which the author referred to "snorting cocaine." In recent years, the usage of "snort" to describe drug use has become taboo in some circles, and alternative terms have arisen. However, "snort" remains a widely recognized and popular term among drug users and in popular culture, due in part to its association with the dramatic, high-energy inhalation that often accompanies the consumption of illicit substances.
