Definition of the word chemise

The word "chemise" can be traced back to the Middle Ages, when it referred to a simple, long-sleeved tunic made of heavy fabric, worn by men and women under their clothing as a safeguard against the cold. Chemises are often preferred by women for their comfort, support, and modesty, as they conceal underarm and bra straps and provide a smooth, seamless line under clothing.
