The term "gold standard" refers to a monetary system in which the value of a country's currency is fixed in proportion to the amount of gold it holds. The gold standard emerged in the late 19th century as a way to ensure the stability and trustworthiness of currencies by linking them to a tangible asset, rather than relying on arbitrary decisions by governments or banks. The gold standard operated by allowing individuals and institutions to exchange their currency for a certain amount of gold, and vice versa, at a fixed rate. This system facilitated international trade and investment by eliminating the uncertainty and volatility that came with fluctuating currencies.
