Origin of the word keep

The word "keep" has a rich etymology. It comes from the Old English word "ceapan," which means "to promise" or "to covenant." This sense of making a promise or agreement is still seen in modern uses of the word, such as "keeping a promise" or "keeping a secret." However, the word "keep" also has a more physical sense, related to holding or possessing something. This sense comes from the Proto-Germanic word "*kapiz," which is also the source of the Modern German word "halten," meaning "to hold" or "to keep." Over time, the two senses of the word "keep" have converged, so that we can use the word to describe both keeping a promise and keeping a physical possession.
