Definition of the word midshipman

The origin of the word "midshipman" can be traced back to the 17th century, when it was first used to describe a naval officer who served on board a ship as an apprentice, typically stationed in the middle, or "midships," section of the vessel. In naval terms, the midship section of a ship is the area that is directly midway between the bow (front) and the stern (rear), roughly dividing the ship into two equal halves.
