Montagu was a keen gambler and often spent long hours playing cards in the Parliamentary club. During one such session, he requested that his meal be served between two slices of bread, so he could continue playing without having to interrupt the game. This simple idea of a portable snack soon became popular among Montagu's contemporaries, who also began referring to this type of food as a "Sandwich." The name was a nod to Montagu's title, as "Sandwich" was the name of the coastal town in Kent where he had a house.
